Last week, members of CTaLE attended a UCL Economics Department seminar featuring Dr. Neha Batura, Dr. Hassan Haghparast-Bidgoli and Dr. Jolene Skordis-Worrall from the UCL Institute for Global Health. They presented on the interesting topic of “Assessing Economics using Portfolios: Building Skills while Building the Assessment.” Through looking at real examples of academic portfolios, Dr. Batura and Dr. Haghparast-Bidgoli elaborated on how students have consolidated their work alongside reflections on their learning and thought process into one place. This prompted great discussion on how portfolios could be used and managed properly in an economic assessment setting.

Dr Ramin Nassehi:
“Asking students to create a portfolio of their reflection on assignments makes them think about the purpose of the assignments in a deeper way. They start to think about why this or that question was asked!”
Madeleine Adamson:
“I think this approach would actually be really beneficial, particularly the reflection process, as students can analyse the material they’ve learned and how they learned it. It’s also useful that all their work is collected into one place so when a student applies for further education or employment that requires work examples they know exactly where to find it.”
