The Skills Lab started up in Autumn 2013 as a not-for-credit option for 2nd and 3rd years who wanted to arm themselves with the research, writing and presenting skills that are required to do well in the degree and for a career as a professional economist, in academia or elsewhere.
Each session of the Skills Lab is a 2 hour in-person workshop preceded by online pre-tasks. For example, the Reading and Note-taking workshop in 2014 assigned a couple of fairly technical journal articles as pre-reading. The workshop then focused on how to read such papers in the most effective way and how to annotate them in a way that helped stdents remember the essential contents. The writing workshops involved peer and instructor feedback on student writing, as well as critical analysis of writing styles in journal articles. Further workshops and online resources are being developed for the next academic year.
