The Effect of Higher University Fees

How is student performance (and effort) affected when university fees rise? We use extensive individual-level data to answer this questions. The causal effect is of course difficult to identify, so we use a difference-in-difference approach and exploit the fact that overseas students were not affected by the 2012 tripling of fees in England. So the difference between domestic and overseas students before and after the fee rise helps to identify the effect of the rise in fees. Our results are presented in this Fees Poster. A full paper is forthcoming.
